About Ideal Weight Calculator

The Ideal Weight Calculator estimates a healthy body weight range from your height and gender using four formulas developed by different researchers between 1964 and 1983: Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi. Rather than picking one formula and presenting it as definitive, this tool shows all four side by side along with their average — since the formulas disagree with each other by a few kilograms, seeing the spread gives a more honest picture than a single number pretending to be precise.

All four formulas share the same basic shape: a base weight for someone exactly 5 feet tall, plus a fixed amount added for every inch taller than that. They differ only in the base weight and the per-inch coefficient, which is why they produce similar but not identical results — the Devine formula (originally created for medical drug dosing, not fitness) tends to sit in the middle of the four, while Miller's tends to run a little higher.

These formulas were derived from population averages decades ago and don't account for muscle mass, bone density, frame size or body composition — a muscular athlete can be well above every one of these numbers while being perfectly healthy, and someone with a naturally small frame might be healthy somewhat below them. They're a rough population-level estimate, not a personalized medical target.

Why do the four formulas give different answers?

Each was developed by a different researcher at a different time, using different reference populations. They share the same "base weight at 5 feet plus an amount per extra inch" structure but use different base weights and coefficients, so results typically differ by a few kilograms.

Is this formula accurate for athletes or very tall/short people?

Not necessarily.
